MV VENUGOPALAN

POST-1

Dear Editor,

We are left with only just three more days for the deadline given by the SC to expire.

Opinions of all sorts have been expressed by pensioner friends from all the nook and corner of the country. I still couldn't summon the courage to make conjectures on a court order which has not an iota of clarity, befuddled and lacked proper direction, though, as far as we are concerned, it was a welcome and partly positive development.

It appears, due to the mind-boggling number of cases pending, the judges are under tremendous pressure to take the fast-track in dealing with them thus resulting in such minor aberrations.

The system has to be blamed, not the dispensers of justice. Then, is it a case of imagination running riot or again, a case of 6 blind men trying to define an elephant, that our prime ’case handlers’ and couple of others ventured to provide interpretations of different hues and colours about the SC Order of 7th May?

Were they looking for a black cat in a dark room, which is not there? One of them straightaway embarked upon a celebratory mood, and why, even hinted that 10% of the 20% of the ad-interim DR relief should be diverted towards the legal fund.

What till today remains as a unresolved puzzle and mystery to me is that if the Order is not a speaking one and fraught with confusion, the best option would have been to seek clarification. What was the reason for our leaders in refraining from such a step in toto. Did they think that it will entail delay or they wanted to observe how the Order played out at the hands of LIC/GOI or they feared that they may have to face some bare facts when they receive the clarification.

If the strategy is to save time and avoid avoidable adjournments, it is not going to happen as we are now faced with the eventuality of contemplating contempt proceedings against LIC for not honouring the provisions of the order (whatever that means).
(To be continued)
