Justice Krishna Iyer turns 100
He wrote judgments keeping in mind the small man on the streets and ensured that the voice of the common man was heard in the portals of the higher judiciary and corridors of power. No wonder that he took pity of the LIC Pensioner’s plight and did not hesitate to write a frank letter to the Finance Minister urging for his interference and quick settlement of the court cases which the pensioners have won. I am constrained to bring in here the extract of his letter which speaks volumes about his erudition and his concern for the oppressed.
- “ Here is a case of arbitrariness which I dare say has been overlooked by your ministry and must be set right once it is discovered. The older the age of the pensioner greater the need for liberal pension since age invites infirmity. The LIC pensioners are one integral group and cannot be divided into different classes. Date is an irrelevant factor when alteration in pension was made…………..I therefore feel that your ministry in all fairness instructs LIC to implement court judgments. Immediate action is called for as a humanitarian and patriotic duty which otherwise will affect the old age pensioners. “
